Every Monday dozens of members of the Sewority Sisters meet at the Creative Sewing Machine Center at 519 12th St. in West Columbia’s Triangle City.

“We make quilts for cancer patients at Lexington Medical Center,” said Rachel Branum, Sewority Sisters president. “We surprise the patients with the quilts. “It’s very touching for us to be able to do it. It’s very emotional and rewarding, too, to let them know we care.”

Pam Vadasz is a member of the Sewority Sisters. She said the group consists of sew-a-holics. They give their time and talent and affinity for sewing as a labor of love.

“We’re able to share our love for sewing and give something to others,” Vadasz said. “It’s good therapy for us.”

Sewority Sisters is a non-profit. Branum provides the supplies to make the quilts and she assembles the covers after the members of the group create them. When finished the quilts are delivered to LMC.

Sewority Sisters is 2.5 years old. The group completed 400 quilts in 2023. In February the group will donate its 1,000 quilt at the Oncology wing at LMC. And that’s not all.

In February of 2022, Sewrority Sisters, donated 92 blankets, 13 hats, and a wealth of port pillows to Lexington Oncology to be shared with patients undergoing treatment.

Gail Sullivan is another member of the Sewority Sisters. She is also a member of Quilts of Valor. It meets at the Creative Sewing Center on Thursdays. Quilts of Valor donates quilts to Lexington County veterans.

Sullivan said when her son was wounded as a serviceman, the only thing he had when he returned to the United States was a quilt that had been given to him.

“We give quilts to our veterans who were affected by war,” Sullivan said.
