Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individual who was found deceased Wednesday at an abandoned rest area along Interstate 20 westbound. The individual was identified as Mr. Walter R. Payne Jr., 69, of New London, Ohio.

According to Fisher, Mr. Payne’s body was discovered near a wooded area by a trooper with South Carolina Highway Patrol shortly before 8 a.m.

The rest stop, between the 49 and 48 mile markers, is routinely monitored by Highway Patrol. An autopsy to determine the cause of Mr. Payne’s death is scheduled to take place Friday at MUSC in Charleston. The Lexington County Sheriff’s Department is investigating
