WEST COLUMBIA AMERICAN LEGION POST 79 WINS STATE BASEBALL CHAMPIONSHIP
The West Columbia American Legion Post 79 baseball team defeated Greer 7-1, Sunday to win the State Championship in Baseball Summer League for American Legion-aged players.
The double-elimination tournament featured the state’s four top teams of American Legion-aged players. The tournament was played at Segra Park in Columbia. The winning pitcher Sunday was Dylan Williamson.
“It’s awesome. I could not be anymore excited for these kids. These kids worked hard,” said West Columbia head coach Dargan Lybrand. “They deserve all the fortune they’ve had here.”
“It’s the first time West Columbia has ever won the state championship,” said West Columbia Attorney Billy Oswald. He is a member of American Legion Post 79 and a longtime supporter of the baseball team.
West Columbia went undefeated in the tournament defeating Greer twice and Fort Mill. West Columbia finished the season with a record of 17-2.
The team is made up of high school players from local high schools including: Airport; Brookland-Cayce; White Knoll; and Pelion. Some are local high school graduates who play for college teams.
The normal American Legion season was altered to the Baseball Summer League this year because of the COVID-19 crisis.
