West Columbia Post 79 wins, will play for Summer League State Championship

The West Columbia Post 79 baseball team defeated Fort Mill 8-4, Saturday to advance to the final of the Baseball Summer League State Tournament for American-Legion-aged players.

The tournament, featuring the state’s top four Summer League teams is being played at Segra Park in Columbia.

West Columbia is now one game away from becoming the S.C. American Baseball Summer League champions.

The team is sponsored by American Legion Post 79 in West Columbia and features players from Airport High School, Brookland-Cayce, White Knoll and Pelion. Some are local high school graduates who play for college teams.

West Columbia will play the winner of the elimination game between Fort Mill (15-3) and Greer (15-1.) That game is at 11 a.m., Sunday.

The final featuring West Columbia is scheduled for 1:30 p.m., Sunday. Fort Mill eliminated Sumter with a 3-0 victory Saturday.

If West Columbia loses in the 1:30 pm final Sunday, the same two teams would play again at 5 p.m. Monday to determine the champion.
