Richland County Coroner Gary Watts is releasing the name of the person who died on Saturday, after being involved in a motor vehicle collision.

The incident occurred just before 7:30 A.M. on I-77 North at mile marker 28 (Blythewood). The victim loss control of the vehicle and left the roadway colliding with a tractor trailer.  

Cassandra Harrington, 22, of Passage Drive, Fort Mill was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy revealed that the cause of death was blunt force trauma.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the South Carolina Highway Patrol continue to investigate this incident.

ORIGINAL REPORT – A collision on I-77 near Blythewood early Saturday, resulted in a fatality.

The crash occurred about 7 a.m. Saturday a mile north of Blythewood Road, near mile marker 28, said Lance Cpl. Matt Southern of the South Carolina Highway Patrol.

A big-rig without the trailer was parked in the emergency lane on northbound I-77.

The driver of a Toyota Corolla swerved off the left side of the interstate while traveling in the northbound lane, Southern said. The driver over-corrected and swerved right hit the parked truck.

The driver of the Toyota, who was wearing a seatbelt, was trapped in the vehicle and died, said Southern said. The driver of the truck was not injured.

The wreck blocked part of the interstate for a while.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the collision. The name of the the deseased has not yet been released.
