West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles issued a message Tuesday afternoon, regarding the efforts of the City of West Columbia, as it deals with the coronavirus crisis.

“Just had a great conversation with (SC) Governor (Henry) McMaster,” said Miles. “He called to check on the people of West Columbia. I am thankful for his leadership in this difficult time and for him reaching out to see how he can assist us. He and his staff have always done a wonderful job of being available to our city.”

Miles also spoke to Steve Varholy on WXRY 99.3-Radio, Tuesday. The interview served as a State of the City of West Columbia of sorts.

Miles said city officials are listening to the CDC and DHEC, and will follow the recommendations the governor makes for the state. “We’ll get through this,” said Miles, but the crisis has resulted in some changes.

“It has put the city on its head,” Miles said of the coronavirus, but we’re providing all city services, including garbage pick-up. All of the city’s websites and phone numbers are the same.

He also said public access at city hall has been limited, but business is being conducted remotely, and fees to use credit cards for payments to the city are being waived.

In the interview, Varholy told Miles he is bullish on West Columbia and complimented the efficiency of the City of West Columbia’s personnel. Miles responded by saying the city is on a great run, and the future is promising.

He said West Columbia’s proximity to Downtown Columbia and the Congaree River are fueling West Columbia’s revitalization and redevelopment efforts.

“There’s kayaking, fishing, swimming in a major city,” said Miles.

The mayor also said West Columbia is the perfect size to be nimble and proactive to business.

“We find a way to say ‘yes’ to proposals,” said Miles.

Varholy characterized West Columbia’s relationship with business and new ideas as refreshing.

Miles said as the city moves forward, the focus of revitalization with be directed down Meeting Street toward Triangle City

He said there are great restaurants in Triangle City, “the heart of the city” that is marked by Zesto, with the giant, and iconic ice cream cone in front.

Miles noted that there has been some facade work in Triangle City and there are new store fronts.

“We want to revitalize the retail scene in West Columbia,” said Miles. “There are lots of redevelopment opportunities.”

Miles also said commerce is supported by the great neighborhoods and the vitality level of the community is being bolstered by the abundance of families with young children choosing to live in West Columbia.

“It’s just a great place to live, and do business,” said Miles.
