West Columbia and mayor working through coronavirus challenges
Developing a strategy to deal with the coronavirus crisis is a challenge to all, including West Columbia Mayor Tem Miles.
And with the closing of all in-dining at restaurants, many West Columbia businesses are reacting to best-serve their customers.
“I just hope everyone takes it seriously,” said Miles. “It may not affect you personally, but it’s important to limit face-to-face contact as much as possible.” Miles also said to make sure you consider those who are most-vulnerable to the dangers of the coronavirus.
Miles said the city is taking into consideration the Centers for Disease Control recommendations on social distancing. He also said the city will practice the measures being taken across the nation to limit contact, including travel bans, school closures, quarantines, and event cancellations. Access to public buildings and customer service is being restricted in West Columbia, while payments are being taken over the phone or online.
On Tuesday, the City of West Columbia announced the opening of the Meeting Street Artisan Market has been postponed and so has Kinetic Derby Day, until further notice.
“We’re not taking the coronovirus lightly,” said Miles. “It is with great pause that we are taking these steps.” He said city planners are monitoring federal recommendations and making following the most-recent updates.
West Columbia is altering its sanitation collection schedule and suspending special pick-ups. Municipal traffic court dates have been pushed back from March and April to April and May.
Miles said it is also important to protect city employees who deal with the public. And the city will limit contact as much as possible.
Miles it the crisis has affected his family personally. “My wife is home-schooling our three children.” He said his paralegal at the Miles Law Firm has had her March 28, wedding cancelled by the venue that was holding it. “It’s tough right now,” said Miles.
But he offered words of encouragement.
“I have no doubt we’ll bounce back from this,” said Miles. “We ‘re a resilient community. The question is when? We’ll just have to wait and see.”
West Columbia businesses are reacting to the coronavirus crisis too.
