The completion date on the Wilton Road repair in Springdale is April 30.
Jeremy Yuhas, resident construction engineer for the S.C. Department of Transportation, said that is the target date.

“I’ve been down there to check on it,” said Rep. Micah Caskey, who lives around the block from the work site. “It looks like the progress on it is going great. I know it has taken too long to get this far, but I hope the weather holds, and I am excited and I look forward to the finished product.”

Yuhas said construction crews on the site now are reinforcing a 150-ft. soil slope that was damaged in the 2015 flood. Some called it a 1,000-year flood.

Yuhas said part of the work involves a repair of the soil, while making sure none of the existing infrastructure is disrupted.

“We’re rebuilding it, without disturbing the dam that is there,” he said.

Yuhas said the road was eroded when a torrent of water during the flood churned away the dirt that was supporting the road. “The drainage system was overburdened,” he said. “And it caused the road to erode beneath it.”

The goal, according to Yuhas, ” is to make the soil around the road more structurally sound.
