Brookland Cayce scores playoff win over Wilson
Under a steady rain, Brookland-Cayce ran over Wilson by a score of 40-6, Friday night at Fort Knox.
It was the Bearcats eighth consecutive win.
BC’s Will Way had 151 yards rushing and the Bearcats had close to 400 yards on the ground.
Coming into the game Wilson Quarterback Zayshaun Rice had passed for 2,345 yards. But in the rain, neither team was able to pick up much through the air. That was an advantage for Brookland-Cayce and its prolific running game.
The Bearcats defense opened the scoring after Malachi Brown picked up a Wilson fumble and took it 21 yards into the end zone. BC was up 7-0 with 8:28 left in the first quarter.
The Bearcat defense stopped the Tigers and Will Way returned the punt 75 yards for a TD to put BC up 13-0, with 4:50 left in the first quarter, after the extra point was no good on a slick field.
When Wilson failed to convert on a fourth and two, BC got the ball and Latrell Jamison ran it into the end zone from 36 yards out to give the Bearcats a 20-0 lead with 2:03 left in the first quarter.
On its next possession, Wilson was able to drive to the BC 6. Then the Tigers lined up for a field goal. On the fake, Zayshaun Rice, the holder, ran the ball in for a touchdown, to cut BC’s lead to 20-6.
Will Way answered with a four-yard touchdown run from the wildcat formation, to put BC up 26-6 after another missed extra point. Way scored again from 51 yards out after a Wilson punt with 1:19 left in the second quarter. The halftime score was 33-6, BC after a made extra point.
Brookland-Cayce opened the third quarter with the ball and a score. Deontay Baker had a 59-yard run to set BC up. Baker then took the ball into the end zone from 25 yards out to put the Bearcats up 40-6.
Brookland-Cayce improves to 8-3 with the win and will move on to play Hartsville in the third round of the 4A S.C. High School League playoffs.
