Richland County Coroner Gary Watts released the name of the individual who died in vehicle collision that occurred early Tuesday morning. The incident occurred on Interstate 20 westbound at mile marker 82, Elgin.

Wesley Dean Welch, 47, of West Columbia, was the unrestrained driver of a SUV that was struck by a tractor trailer. Mr. Welch was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy indicated the cause of death to be blunt force injuries of the head, neck and torso.

The Richland County Coroner’s Office and the SC Highway Patrol are investigating the incident.
