2016 Lexington County traffic deaths down slightly

Forty-one people died on the roads in Lexington County for the year 2016.scdps

In the last four years- from 2013 to 2016- 2015 is the year that had the most traffic deaths in Lexington County- with 46.

In 2014, there were 36 traffic deaths and 39 in 2013. The data comes from the S.C. Department of Public Safety.
Not only was the county traffic death rate slightly lower in 2016 compared to 2015, that trend was true for South Carolina.

Statewide, 975 people died on South Carolina highways, compared to 979 highway deaths during the same time period in 2015. But 2017 has gotten off to a deadlier start.
The DPS reported that 12 people were killed on South Carolina roads during the New Year’s Holiday weekend that ended at midnight, Jan. 2.

Data from DPS also shows that of the 635 motor vehicle occupants who died in 2016, 322 were not wearing safety belts.

Through midnight Dec. 31, 137 pedestrians had died compared to 125 in 2015. In 2016 there were 135 motorcycle deaths compared to 140 in 2015. And in 2016, 25 bicyclists died on the state’s roads compared to 16 in 2015.
