2 people, ages 70 and 64, killed after being hit on I-26

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individuals who died due to being struck by a motor vehicle.

The incident occurred on Interstate 26 westbound near exit 119 shortly before 4 a.m., Saturday.

According to Fisher, Mr. Frank James Bates, 64, and Ms. Bobbie Jenkins, 70, both of Columbia, were pronounced dead at the scene due to their injuries. The vehicle that the couple had been traveling in had become disabled in the median, and they were walking across the westbound lanes of I-26 when they were struck.

The South Carolina Highway Patrol is investigating the incident.
