19-year-old woman dies attempting to jump on tractor-trailer on I-20, says coroner

Lexington County Coroner Margaret Fisher has identified the individual who died after being struck by a semi-trailer following a multiple vehicle collision that occurred on Interstate 20 Eastbound at mile marker 59 shortly before 11 a.m., Tuesday.

According to Fisher, Maliyah Smith, 19, of East Point, Georgia was pronounced dead at an area hospital due to injuries sustained.

Ms. Smith was driving a stolen vehicle, which was rendered disabled after she collided with several other vehicles. Following the collision, Ms. Smith reportedly ran out onto the interstate where she attempted to jump onto a moving semi-trailer. Ms. Smith was struck when she fell under the trailer.

The incident is under investigation by the South Carolina Highway Patrol.
