1 dead after I-26 crash, Wednesday afternoon, interstate blocked while EMS crews responded

The driver of a 2010 Hyundai Elantra died after running off the interstate, Wednesday, according to Trooper Tyler Tidwell of the SC Highway Patrol. The crash occurred around 4:45 p.m. near the 112 Mile Marker on I-26 westbound.

Tidwell said the driver was the only occupant in the car and died after running off the interstate to the right. The driver then overcorrected and ran into a median barrier on the left side of the road. The driver died at the scene, said Tidwell.

The crash resulted in the closing of the interstate for a while until the site was cleared. Drivers were diverted onto Cayce and West Columbia streets, forming long lines of traffic, while EMS crews blocked the interstate. (West Columbia Fire Department photo below)
