In a surprise presentation, Sen. Nikki Setzler was presented with the Order of the Palmetto, Thursday in the office of Gov. Henry McMaster. Setzler’s wife, Ada Jane, his children and grandchildren, along with many friends and legislative collogues were on hand for the presentation.

“Friends and collogues put you up,” McMaster said as he presented the award to Setzler. He also called Setzler “an outstanding man.” Setzler became emotional as he accepted the award.

The Order of the Palmetto is given to South Carolina citizens in recognition of outstanding achievements and contributions to the state. Recipients are chosen for the award by a non-partisan panel and must meet certain criteria after going through a nomination process.

McMaster said Setzler’s list of accomplishments and contributions fills pages. Setzler, of West Columbia, was first elected to the State Senate in 1976. He has served on countless boards and committees, and has been recognized for his service in education, business and civic endeavors.

Senate President Thomas Alexander and Setzler’s Desk Mate Sen. Brad Hutto presented Setzler with the Senate Resolution.
